Body Condition Score
Visual 9-point BCS scale adjusts target weight so underweight and overweight dogs get the right amount.
Activity Adjusted
From couch potato to working dog — five activity levels calibrate calorie output precisely.
Every Lifestage
Puppy, adult, senior, pregnant or lactating — lifestage multipliers built into the formula.
How the calculation works
Resting Energy Requirement (RER)
We start with the standard veterinary formula: RER = 70 × (body weight in kg)0.75. This gives the minimum calories needed for basic bodily functions at rest.
BCS weight adjustment
If your dog's body condition score is above or below ideal (4–6), we adjust the target weight up or down before calculating RER — so the result targets a healthy weight, not the current one.
Activity & lifestage multiplier
RER is multiplied by a factor based on activity level (1.0 for weight loss → 2.2 for working dogs) and further adjusted for lifestage (e.g. ×1.3 for puppies, ×0.9 for seniors).
Food amount estimate
Daily calories are divided by a standard dry kibble energy density of 3.5 kcal/g to give an estimated gram-per-day amount. Always check your specific food's label for its exact calorie content.
